Manure…a daily recurring challenge for horse owners that you never, ever finish! You check the manure for worms, loose manure, too firm manure, color…and then you still have to clean up that manure. Because besides being a wonderful breeding ground for pests like flies, manure left lying around is also bad for the horses' health.
A few facts about manure
- A horse poops on average 15 times a day, this can vary per horse.
- Mares and geldings smell the manure of other horses and then defecate there themselves. If the manure is not regularly cleaned up, the manure pile will grow larger and larger.
- Stallions defecate on top of existing manure, so the manure pile gets higher. They do this to camouflage the presence of mares in heat in the herd, thus keeping rivals at bay. It also serves as an affirmation of their position in the herd. Only the dominant stallion is allowed to poop on top of other manure.
- Horses do not poop where they eat.
- The color of manure says a lot about the diet: mainly grass will result in more green manure. Lots of hay and straw will result in more yellowish manure.
Of course, you want to clean up all this manure as quickly and efficiently as possible.
